Poison Prevention Awareness Month
How to protect your pet from hidden hazards
Spring is on its way! As we start opening windows, sprucing up our homes, and preparing for the warmer months, it’s the perfect time to think about pet safety. March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month, and while we’re all looking forward to longer days and blooming gardens, some common household and outdoor items can pose serious risks to our furry friends.
Pets are naturally curious, and many love to sniff, chew, and explore—sometimes getting themselves into trouble. Knowing what to watch out for can prevent accidents and keep tails wagging happily!
Common household pet poisons
Spring cleaning products: many household cleaners contain chemicals that can be toxic to pets if licked off paws or fur. Keep bottles safely stored and opt for pet-safe alternatives when possible.
Dangerous foods: chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, alcohol, and anything containing xylitol (found in sugar-free gum and sweets) can be highly toxic to pets—even in small amounts.
Toxic plants: lilies (especially dangerous for cats), daffodil bulbs, azaleas, and sago palms can cause severe illness if ingested. Check your houseplants and garden before letting pets roam!
Medications and human products: everyday painkillers like ibuprofen and paracetamol can be fatal to pets. Always store medications securely and never give human medicine to your pet unless directed by a vet.
What to do if you suspect poisoning
Stay calm, and act fast!
If you think your pet has eaten something toxic:
Remove them from the source immediately.
Call your vet straight away – don’t wait for symptoms to appear!
If possible, keep the packaging, take a photo with your phone, or note what was ingested to help your vet assess the situation.
Preventing accidents
A little prevention goes a long way. Be mindful of what is within reach. Store cleaning products, food, and medicines securely. Check your garden before letting your pet explore. If you ever have concerns, get in touch – we’re always happy to help with advice and support.
